The Cinco: Kickoff
The Story of the 2169 Season begins.
The defending Champs (Iowa) did not get off to the start they were hoping for, despite the offense putting up over 350 yards, having almost a 2:1 possession time advantage, along with the defense getting constant pressure on the QB, resulting in 7 sacks, and winning the turning over battle with the smallest of margins; it was the lack of Iowa’s red zone execution that put Watford in the position for a late game miracle that came in the form of a 4th & 29 from their own 15. QB Dennis Sizemore launched a desperation heave that fell in to the arms of WR Marion Zastrow; who then broke free from CB Daniel Butts, for a game-winning 84-yard catch & run.
New owners, Coteup & Wolfpac255, enjoyed opening day wins in the first full season with their respective teams, although the handlers of Wolfpac255 should poke him to let him know the season has started. Spurt is also starting his first full season in Fort Wayne, but did not enjoy the same success, despite a valiant effort from the team.
The blowout of the week was easy to spot. Fantasia steamed rolled Alabama 62 – 14. Alabama’s offense did move the ball a little, but their defense must have found a Groupon to a lovely tourist destination, if they didn’t, they will need it after this game. On the ground, Fantasia’s RB Edward Osborn must have thought he was reliving in his college years, averaging over 10.8 yards per tote, not to mention, 3 rushing scores. Through the air, the 2168 Mcdade award winner, QB Chistopher Leth, passed for 312 yards and 6 TDs, and also without a blemish on his uniform. Fantasia’s defense joined in the festivities with 5 sacks as the secondary blanketed Alabama’s receivers.
Finley and Hogwarts squared off in a roller coaster of the game that saw Finley take a 8-point lead into halftime only to find themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard with the opening play of the 4th quarter. Finley, on the ensuing possession and showing its resolve, starting on its own 15-yard line, marched down the field to reclaim the lead, with never seeing a 3rd down on the drive. Then, on Hogwart’s ensuring drive, they marched down the field, but could not convert on a 3rd & 2 in the red zone, but were close enough for K Jeremy Ramey to kick the 32-yard field game that would prove to be the difference; with the final score, Hogwarts 22 – Finley 21.
Notable Week 1 Injuries:
Iowa – Starter S Matthew Torres is out for 12 weeks with a dislocated shoulder
Finley – Veteran CB Darnell Cooper will be nursing a pulled hamstring for 6 weeks (+?)
Honolulu – Mega deal beneficiary LB Martin Girard suffered a high ankle sprain, and could be a lingering issue for months
Lebanon – CB James “Smooth” Sebren will miss at least 5 weeks with a dislocated elbow
Charlotte – Rising Star G Steve Camacho is expected to miss 4 weeks, dealing with shoulder issues.
Shrewsbury – Breakout year on pause for WR Nicholas Baker, who is now subject to the league’s concussion protocol
Haymarket – LB Michael Shirley’s productive career maybe in jeopardy after suffering a broken fibula, if surgery and physical therapy occur without hiccups, he maybe able to rejoin the team before the end of the regular season, but can he return to form
Midwest – 2nd year standout T James Headrick is expected to be sideline for at least 4 weeks while dealing with a dislocated elbow
